Wedge tr8 air/smog pump??????

What exactly does this thing do? It looks like it adds cool clean air into the exaust, what reason?? Lower(trick) emissions test-cool converters? Is it OK to disconnect the belt?
Thanks

The A/P pumps air into the exhaust to complete the burn when the car is cold. Otherwise it would cause carbon deposits and block the converter. Disconnecting the belt is up to you. Check to make sure it's not illegal in your state first

I guess that explains why fuel injected cars generally don't have air pumps. The mixture is more tightly controlled.

Thanks-- So i guess it only works on warm up? I see what looks to be valves comming off the air rails on the exaust manifolds. Do they open and close with engine temp?

Nope. You're looking at check valves. They keep the exhaust gas from backing through the A/P when the A/P belt breaks, or the exhaust gas is under higher pressure than the A/P can put out. (But, knowing the A/P on these British cars the former is probably the real reason

Boy does it ever make a mess when one of those valves die and let the hot exhaust gass back up and melt and burn things.
