I'm planning on doing this shortly, but discovered something strange. Both the Haynes and Bentley manuals say to take the plug out, put in a zerks, grease it, and then remove the zerks and replace the plug. Is there any reason you can't leave the zerks in place? Seems like a rather painful and redundant thing to do...

TR4s also have such a plug, but on them there is a ground strap on there to ground the steering column. I supposed that was the reason for the plug (with a big hex head) rather than a zerk left in place.

If one isn't using the plug for a ground then I see no reason why the zerk needs to be removed. Indeed, it is probably feasible to use a zerk to hold the ground connection.
