I have a 1980 TR7 I rebuilt the carburetor, replaced all fuel lines in the engine compartment, replaced air filter, (waiting in new fuel filter), replaced plugs last year. She starts right up but will not idle and when running is not smooth very rough or spluttering noise. Any idea how to smooth out and keep running thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the insight I have replaced the rubber carb mounts they had some cracking. I did not balance carbs after rebuild watched video will give it a try. TR7 starts a little harder now but runs smoother. SHe does make a popping noise if you give it lots of gas and new problem after I put it back together I have coolant leaking into air filter from hard plastic piping between carbs. I cannot figure out what the assembly is. It does not match pictures in Haynes or parts catalog i have for thermostat any idea? AGain thanks for all the direction.

Hi, and welcome to the BCF!

My first thought is vacuum leak; have you checked those lines/connections? Float level set correctly?

Those two items are where I would start. I'm sure some more folks will chime in shortly.

Good luck!

1. Check the rubber carb to manifold mounts. They get old and crack, creating leaks. Very common and give similar symptoms you what describe.
2. How did you sync the carbs? You really need a vacuum gauge to do this correctly. If out of sync, they will run rough. A flat type sync tool that fits against the mouth of the carb is available here: Moss Europe
A home made "solution" is shown here: Youtube

How's the compression?
Have you double-check the emission line routing? Is the carbon canister open?

IMO, the "listening to the hiss" method will get the synchronization plenty close enough. From your description, I would be looking elsewhere for the cause.

Ok I am back at it after winter. I got two new manifold mounts and put them and restarted the engine and had coolant poor into air filter. Any ideas what would cause this?

Sounds like you mixed up hoses. There are 2 coolent hoses that go to the FASD. You may have hooked them to the carb vent lines.
