Wedge TR7- Spitting & Caughing at quick acceleration ??

I have had a few small problems the last week with my 78 TR7. Firstly, it is taking a long time of turning over before it starts. It is like the gas isn't there for it on startup. Also, When I accelerate quickly, the car sputters, jerks, then finally finds a spot where it is happy, and runs great over 50 KPH. When I start slowly from a stop, it is fine. Highway driving has been no problem at all either.
Thanks

are these the manual choke Zenith/Stromberg carbs? if not...

If yes, perhaps a leak is emptying the fuel bowls requiring you to crank until they are refilled.

As for sputtering acceleration: If Z/S check your dashpot oil.

Do you ever get the smell of unburnt gas? If so it could be ignition related. My first thought though is the fuel pump (if fuel related). Good place to start would b to pull the plugs and have a look at their colour and see if they're still good.

Re: TR7- Spitting & Caughing at quick acceleration

I checked the dashpots, and they were low. I filled them a couple weeks ago too ??? The car runs much better now. I only noticed the problem one time.
Where could the oil be going? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Paul,

Are there little vent holes on your dashpot tops? If so cehck the top of your carbs tomarrow after driving it some and see if it is squirting some oil up out the top. Otherwise you may have a small leak and the oil is just being sucked into the intake.

Re: TR7- Spitting & Caughing at quick acceleration

There's an O-ring around the needle adjusting screw in the bottom of the piston. If that isn't making a good seal, you'll lose oil. It's kind of a pain to replace, but not a hard job.

When it comes time to troubleshoot a F/I problem you'll wish you had a "Check Engine" light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Oh, but I do...oh wait, that's just for the lamda sensor. Actually, so far I've managed to troubleshoot a couple of problems (bad fuel supply and bad cold start injector) using the Bentley manual. Once you dissect the wiring diagram and how it's supposed to work, it's pretty straight forward. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
