What are the functional differences between a "recovery" and "expansion" system as seen on the early and late TR7's.

Ok, not specifically for TR7's, but since I have an early TR7 and a late TR7 with different coolant systems I was curious. I think that TR8's all use the recovery system.
 
Good question, I had a donor TR7 I drove for about 6 months before it sacrificed itself for my 8 and I never realized there was a difference
