Wedge TR7 4 speed wheel cylinders on 5 speed (locating pin)

Hello everyone,

This is a question that I have put in other forums and have received very good advice about installing 4 speed wheel cylinders in 5 speed drums. The answers that I have heard are that a hole must be drilled for the locating pin that is on the opposite side on the 4 speed w/s.
But my remaining specific question is ... is the locating pin meant just to help with install or does it have a further function once installed? Can I grind the pin off to avoid the additional drilling of a hole in the back plate or, is it necessary for function or safety?
Thanks everyone
TR
