Re: TR6, New cam and gear alignment, Help??

I may be missing something here as I have no experience with TR6's but--- The crank gear will only go on one way, the cam gear should only go on one way. Both gears have timing marks on them which need to be lined up. What's the problem? Bob

Re: TR6, New cam and gear alignment, Help??

Allan, I just went through the very same thing with my new GP2 cam. First, a few questions. Are you using an original style new cam gear with four holes? The marks you are referring to should be on the FRONT of the old cam gear. The four holes will allow you to get four distinct different timing chain locations. The holes on the old gear, if you look closely, are not perfectly symmetrical with the gear teeth themselves. Are you using both new gears and chain? Do you have a dial gauge? Is the oil pan off right now? (makes it a lot easier to see what you are doing from beneath with a flashlight. Sounds dumb but works.) With the old cam, gears and chain all put together on the bench (with the gears and chain hanging over the edge) you can get a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish by looking at how the old cam lobes hang and where the gears line up by looking very carefully at the alignment marks with a straight edge. With this info in your mind's eye, you should be able to transfer these same marks to your new gears. (I would hold the old setup off the side of the bench in the same position as when installed in engine, eyeball and eventually transferred the marks to new gear. Dropped down to floor many times with flashlight to see what my cam was doing. Use dial gauge to check the amount of lift your lifters are giving your push rods. This info came with your GP2 cam.) Let us know what is happening. It will all make sense after a while.

Re: TR6, New cam and gear alignment, Help??

Hello Allan,

bear in mind that the crank gear does two revolutions to the cam gear so the timing mark goes round twice. You need to set the crank to TDC, and then turn your cam to the position you want, i.e. both lobes down on number one and then line up your marks.
Ideally though you should use that as a basis to start from then time it with a degree wheel and clock gauge (dial indicator) to set as per cam makers direction. Especially note if the valve clearances need to be set to a specific timing setting which can be different to the running clearance.
