"finished" rebuild 1974 TR6... 32 thousand actual miles, but sitting idle in garage 22 years
required near ground up all systems over 8 dollar clutch part broke.
gist of it... the machine takes a long time to seem to be warmed up...
long time before I can throw choke control closed and then have nice idle at stops and
smooth take off...
IS this thermostat related... there is 160 and 180 degree ... I am not sure which one I have in car
and don't wish to have nasty liquids streaming all over... is the thermostat a concern,
or just fresh engine gonna take long time to get to temp?
Surely, technology state of the art in the 1930's is adequate today (to steal from Henry Manney III)...
faster warm up via thermostat, or out of my hat?

Hi Wes. First of all, welcome to the asylum! We're all a little crazy here, but it's a good crazy :smile:

Second, technical questions are better asked (and answered) in the Triumph forum than the New Member forum. This forum is mostly for introductions.

Third, I'm not sure what happened, but your message above has a lot of garbage in it. You might want to edit some of that out.

As to your problem, my first suspect would be the thermostat. An easy test (without getting wet) is to start the engine from cold and let it idle. Feel the thermostat housing as it starts to warm up, then feel the hose going to the radiator (or the radiator upper tank). If the thermostat is working; the hose and tank should stay cool until the housing is too hot to keep your hand on, then fairly suddenly start getting hot as the thermostat opens. But if you find that the hose/tank warm up at the same time as the housing, then the thermostat is stuck open and needs to be replaced.

If you don't want to handle the job yourself, any radiator shop should be able to do it for you. But they will also want to change the coolant, which will add to the cost.
