TR6 TR6 vs Miata

Hi, everybody! There's a good thread on the Miata Forum comparing the TR's and Miata. Just go to "Car Talk" in the Miata Forum.
"Love the smell of contoversy in the morning"!
Take care Bob

It's really a non-issue. Stock vs. stock, the Miata is a far, far, far superior car in almost every possible fashion. (The exception is interior space.)

But they are so completely different, it doesn't much matter. You are anonymous in a Miata (at least I am!) A TR6 will turn the heads of enthusiasts, and get conversations going in parking lots.

Both are very fun to drive in different ways.

And my wife's Toyota is superior to the TR3 & TR4 in almost every possible fashion. Geez, I guess that's a pretty important 'almost'.

Had a '96 Miata a decade ago and loved it. It was the first "second car" my then wife and I ever bought, and I loved it. I had almost purchased a TR6 at the time as a daily driver, but decided that a Miata would be better suited to daily use. I absolutely loved the Miata -- good looks, handled like a dream, great engine and tranny (though it could have used a few more horses, in my view). I loved it.

That being said, I just don't recall it putting a smile on my face as much as my 250. Sure, the 250 is a bit more needy, but every second behind the wheel is pure bliss. The *one and only* thing that I liked about the Miata that I sometimes find frustrating about the 250/6 is the top. Sometimes it's convenient just to throw the top back without getting out, unbuttoning everything, folding the side windows in, and then putting on the boot so the whole thing doesn't fly back over the trunck while driving. However, that was the price of the side windows -- on my Healey I don't have that problem. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Really? I've never sat in a Miata, but they must have a wider cockpit and more elbow room than a TR4-6? I guess the earlier TR's with the cut down doors perhaps feel roomier? Maybe there's less stowage behind the seats in a Miata?

Of course, the best reason to buy a Triumph is that you like Triumphs. (One would certainly hope that 30 years of R&D counted for something!)

I've driven Miata's and they are a well built, fun car to drive, if that's what you're looking for. The way that history has of repeating itself, they may someday command the attention that a TR6 now gets when driven in a parade or if you pull into a crowded area on a warm summer day with the top down. Before long, the safety nuts will try to kill the convertibles again and Miatas will take their rightful place in automotive history.

Bill, don't be confused, it is not a relative of a Fiata.

Or a Siata...

Case and point -- I usually walk to the bus stop with my eldest son in the morning. Today, I was taking the TR-250 to work, so we drove the Triumph the 1/2 block to the bus stop to give him a little treat. All the other kids flocked to the car, and kept running their hands over it like it was the obilisk from 2001: A Space Odyssey. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did they then throw animal bones into the air, start using fire and making tools...

And pull their droopy-drawer jeans back up to their waists so their boxers didn't show, turn their baseball caps around forwards, remove the word "like" from their vocabulary, stop refering to everyone as "dude", "man" or "bro" and turn off the vulgar/ugly rap music they'd just pirated into their iPods?

Hey! That would be downright evolutionary... And, to think, an old Triumph was the impetus! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

p.s. Re-reading this, I should clarify... Not refering to *your* kid, of course. Just generalizing about what's loitering around the local Starbucks/burger joint and "today's youth", overall.

Now back when I was a kid, we had to walk 6 miles through two feet of snow.... Not! We just wore sandals, tie-dye shirts and holey bell-bottoms, had pony tails and listened to classical, uplifting music from the likes of Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper and Ozzie Osbourne. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hmmmm... Might appear a bit off topic, but actually sorta like comparing Miatas to TRs, I suppose.

So what you're saying is that we should all go and by one each, box it and then open it back up for the road in about 20 years?
If someone paid let's say $97,200.00 US Somolians for a 4 what would a "miazma" be worth then??
Just teasing, they are fun to drive

[/ QUOTE ]I don't know if 20 years is always enough time, but yeah, that scheme often works if you can afford it. (I can't.)

Meanwhile, comparing a TR6 to a Miata is just plain silly. Of COURSE the Miata would mostly "win" that comparison! My Honda Civic CX has it all over my Herald in every possible way...as I would hope would be the case with a 30-year + gap between them. Guess which one I like driving more?

CDs v. 78 rpm records...HDTV v. Grandpa's Philco "tomestone" radio...Barry Bonds v. Babe Ruth....all pointless comparisons, as far as I'm concerned! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In addition:
Since I had my Miata (sold it for my TR3), I see a Miata and I think, neat, fun-- but.... When a Miata guy sees a TR 3, 6 or whatever, he/she probably thinks neat, fun-- but....

Most of us can't be like Sammyb with a plethora of choices, but I'd have a "practical" toy as well as my 3. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And just where does Sammy spend the majority of his posting time? Right where we are of course, and there is a reason for that.

That's very true, and important. If cars didn't get better over 20 or 30 years, that would be very bad. It also makes the comparison between two cars of different generations very hard.

The modern day equivalent of the classic British sports car, complete with all the technological developments of the past 40 years, is the Miata. I should hope that it does everything better than it's ancestors. Bragging about a Miata in comparison to a TR6 is like saying you can beat up your great grandfather.
My wife drives a Miata, it's a great car. But it's not a TR6 and never will be.
