So the other day I was driving my friend's 72 TR6 and there was a sudden thumping and some loss of power. I was going about 70mph in OD 4th when it happened. Oil pressure still good, etc, but I dove for the exit right when it happened and shut it down as I coasted down the off ramp.
At first I thought a carb diaphragm had torn, as it sounded and acted like that. Nope. Then I thought maybe a head gasket, but no signs of that, and I pulled the plugs and looked for fluid in cylinders. Also, when I did fire it up for a moment, there was backpressure exiting the rear carb, evidenced by some whitish puffs from the carb.
Today I pulled the valve cover and on cylinder 5 a pushrod was about 3/4 inch or so lower than the rocker arm it was supposed to be in contact with. So I slowly turned the engine over to see what was going on. End result, the lifter must have given up the ghost as the pushrod drops way away from the rocker arm on it's downstroke.
This is my first time dealing with this issue, and I want to know if 1) I have to pull the cam 2) or can I get away with dropping the oil pan and cleaning out fragments and replacing the lifter to get the car operational again? Thanks!
