TR6 TR6 Value?

I have an opportunity to purchase a one owner 1976 TR6 with about 45K original miles. The car has no rust, the frame is solid. The car needs complete interior, seats, foams, carpet, door panels, fuzzy door seals and a center switch plinth. It needs a top and was poorly repainted at some point. Whoever did the paint job painted right over the tonneau snaps on the doors. The fenders and drivers door have a few door dings and the passenger door looks like someone opened another car door into it about 100 times. It really should be repainted. It does not have overdrive. The bumpers are in good shape but the overriders look like they are peeling. Needs four tires as it has old Michelin redlines on the front and old Pirellis on the back. It is in mechanically good shape and the exhaust is fine. The owner wants $6000 for the car and I was figuring it for around $3500. Just wondered what you all thought about the value of this car. Am I closer to what it is worth or is the owner? Thanks. John

You should have a look at the frame... especially where the trailing arms attach as they are prone to rust. Also, how are the rocker panels? They can also rust due to poor drainage.

Ha! Brand new TR's off the ship in New Jersey already had rust! Believe me, this car has rust. You just have to find it. Go to the VTR site and check out the TR6 buyers guide.

Linklaw, I'd suggest to pass this one up and spend a bit more on a nicer example, if in fact you're dead-set to purchase and enjoy a TR-6. The cost for new parts just for the items you mention here will run $3,000-$6,000 or more. Add that sum to the $3,500 you pay for this car and you'll quickly have about $10K++ in it. And this assumes you find nothing else wrong with it (unless this car was transported here from the factory in a time machine, it has rust to repair).

Now for the good news: it's a buyer's market out there. VERY nice examples may be had for around $10,000 today: the judicious and patient buyer may find a lovely TR-6, with most of the expensive bits restored, for a paltry few thousand more than this guy, above, is asking.

Most certainly, paying a bit more for a carefully chosen and nicely sorted LBC practically always means paying less in the long run . . . :yesnod:

Good luck, let us know how it goes.
