Hi guys - under the "there is no accounting for taste heading" what do you guys think about powder coating the base TR6 rims silver and running them without the stainless steel inserts?

Any pictures to share?

I really like the inserts. I like them on my car and I like them on others. I forgot once to put on the ring after re mounting a tire and was shocked at how bad it looked (to me,atleast)...too east german or something, i dunno. But maybe powder coating them would set them off.

Any pictures to share?

p.s. this makes me wonder where did Triumph get the idea for the steel wheel and beauty ring. Was this a common treatment among other makes or Triumphs own. I like the look as well as the simplicity.

I think they would look great with the silver center hub cap
and red/white TR6 center emblem.

I'd powder coat the lug nuts flat black to really show off
the silver and red wheel center ..........but that's just me.

go for it!

Ah yes, another youngster in the group. (And please don't take that the wrong way, no malice intended)

Chrome or polished SS trim rings were big on hot rods (see how old I am???) in the 50's through 60's. GM and Chrysler even used them into the 70's on Camaro's and Challengers.

In the 60's, if a guy couldn't afford chrome reversed wheels, he would get chrome trim rings, lug nut covers and inner caps made to fit over the shape of the wheel and have a cheaper version. With the base wheel inner rim painted shiny black, it made it look deeper and hence the faux "reversed" look.

All compliments of J.C. Whitney.

Doc, Dale, TR6 Bill and a few others may be able to remember these little "custom" tricks of the day.

Deep dished with baby moons, another option....

Another trip down memory lane.

Don't have photos to share, but I did not like the look of the TR6 wheels without the trim rings on my TR3A; in either silver or body color.

Of course, I'm not that crazy about the original TR6 trims either (combined with the larger chrome TR3 hubcap), so what I'd like to find is a set of TR3 trim rings (which are narrower and leave more of the center section exposed).

Full moons look pretty cool, too (but not what I want on my car).

I'm going yea on the stainless inserts. I just painted my wheels and even with a fresh coat of paint they didn't look complete until I slid the insert on. I was actually looking at purchasing new inserts since mine are a bit scratched up and dented.

BTW, what are “moonies”???

Will this help

Plus the trim rings make the tires look
a lot wider than they are.
I painted the centers black on mine,as
the Yellow with Silver wheels was just too
much.

Actually mine are repos. The originals are skinnier and a lot nicer looking. Not available anymore and very $$$ if you can find them in good shape. If I had known that when I tossed mine I would have gone another route.

Hi Folks,

I was just driving thru and thought I would add my $.02 here.

I had a `72 TR6. Took off the trim rings and caps to paint the rims (Moss paint I feel is the best).

I too was considering leaving off the trim rings but after looking at one side of the car, (One wheel with & one without a trim ring), There really was`nt much to think about.

I vote "YES" for the trim rings.

Regards, Russ

I don't think they used the trim rings in England. Personally, I don't like the look of the polished trim rings but do like, and very much so, the satin finish. Trying to find original satin finish in good shape is difficult though. I think I have the best of 12 on my car right now.

I think the wheel doesnt look complete without them.

I had them on my GT6 and they looked great!

Moonies, not to be confused with those entranced individuals that always tried to pin fake flowers on you at the airport. Another '70s bit of trivia to be fondly remembered.
Definitely, trim rings.

I forgot to vote. I say keep the rings. Make your wheels smile...

Yah, couldn't find a decal to throw at you. Used to have em on EVERYTHING!!.

I think you're right - no trim rings on the home market. And as you say, the repros are bright, whereas the originals had a satin (brushed?) look.
