I actually am working on my TR250 but several years ago I installed a J type transmission in it. It was purchased in unknown condition however we knew it had been taken apart because of the RTV silicon all over it. It was a mess inside too as whomever did it installed the oil slinger on the outside and under the throw out bearing cover "spigot". It was the first gearbox I've ever worked on. It was completely disassembled. Measured all the tolerances. Ended up replacing al the bearings, layshaft, detent balls and springs and some of the hardened washers. Tested it on the stand and on the road before I closed everything up.
Here's the problem. Particular when down shifting from 4th to 3rd it stays in for a moment then pops out. In some cases you can hold it in and it's fine. Other time even with a lot of force I can't hold it in gear and it pushes it out. Now on the up shift or whenever there is pressure thru acceleration it always stays in. I did disassemble the top cover and replaced all the detent balls, springs and o-rings. I watched a lot of You tube videos and read my manuals as to try to set the spring pressures correctly on the detent balls so I'm not sure I've got them correct. I'm planning to take the cover off and tighten up the detent balls then do a test run and see if it improves or fixes it. Hopefully that works as I don't want to disassemble the tranny if I can help it. Sound like a plan or where do I start?
