TR6 Steering Wheel Removal Success up-date w/pic

The Bentley Manual makes reference to a tool S3600 to remove the steering wheel after the pad, horn bush, connector brush and nut/washer have been removed.

Is there a common automotive gear puller type tool thats a good substitute for this S3600?

I guess I just use an ordinary steering wheel puller. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Than whats the problem??

Re: TR6 Steering Wheel Removal

no problem I suppose, I was just following the Bentley Manual and assumed I'd need a gear puller type tool.

Re: TR6 Steering Wheel Removal

has it ever been off before?
If no puller ,put the nut on a little and give it a good wack with a heavy steel hammer.

WSPanic,
Unless it's seized on there (in which case DNK's recommendation should do the trick), it should come off even with hand force. At least mine did. How much are you actually trying to take off and for what purpose?

I'm replacing it with another steering wheel.

Re: TR6 Steering Wheel Removal

Ditto, all mine came off with just hand force...and I have a nice puller too, never had the chance to use it.

Re: TR6 Steering Wheel Removal

Possibly even a bit gentler than the /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif method is to loosen the nut just a bit. Then have someone sit behind the wheel and pull on it while you -- using the proverbial "suitable drift" and hammer -- tap on the steering column itself.

I'm a wee bit fearful of banging too hard on the nut; those threads are incredibly fine and delicate!

mine comes off by hand, with a little verbal persuasion! A new TR6 may require the special tool, but 32 years on, there is enough wear in mine to get it off by hand.

[/ QUOTE ]Well...remember that that manly TR6 uses a steering column from the Herald...not to mention a six-cylinder engine that evolved directly from the same four-cylinder that powers the mighty Herald. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, and yeah...once the wheel's been off once, it likely will be easier to remove again.

Re: TR6 Steering Wheel Removal

On Chance, even after sitting out in the elements for 10 years, all I did was remove the nut and pull firmly. Replaced the remains of what was once a beautiful wooden wheel with a late model TR6 that I had wrapped in leather.

You may wish to consult the attached sheet regarding Leyland special tools....I have found it pretty useful in the past.
