TR6 TR6 steering rack disassembly

I have removed the snap ring (Moss item 46), but cannot get the pinion to come out. I assumed the end plug would pull out with the pinion, but so far, no. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dennis

Most Spitfire, TR-4, TR-6 racks have small roll pin in the top that keeps the pinion in place. Clean up the shaft and the area around the snap ring and you should see the roll pin. I haven't reworked a rack in about a year so I am speaking from memory. When I dissasemble and rework a rack the only things that I usually find is the long bar (rack) with the slots cut into it, is sometimes bowed, which will cause the steering to be hard to turn. I have straighten the bars and they seem to work OK, but I don't know for how long. I have never found a bad bushing out on the ends, and I pack the racks with red grease and they seem to work OK. Best of Luck, Bill C. Mesa, Az.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I looked carefully, and find the pin that goes in parallel with the pinion shaft. It appears to keep the end plub (Moss #45) from turning. There is no way to grab it, as it is recessed. I may have to ponder this a while.
Thanks,
Dennis

I had the same problem recently on the Triumph rack on my Europa. I found i had to clean very carefully around the circlip (snap ring) groove and even use a scraper to remove a little burring. The pin doesn't prevent the bush coming out.
On mine I put the u/j back on the spline and used gentle percussive persuasion - no, not a bfh - to get it out. It had been there 37 years and wasn't happy about moving.

Bill,Roger, and others:
I put the joint back on, and inserted the pinch bolt. I used a large screwdriver to pry, and the bush and pinion came right out! Now for cleaning etc.
Thanks!
Dennis
