TR6 TR6 Steering column questions

My car is currently on blocks while I am working on my wheels and rear springs. While I am waiting on parts, I am hoping someone can help me with some steering problems. First, is the steering wheel supposed to make contact with the cowl? I can hear metal to metal contact when I turn my steering wheel. How can I correct this? Also, if I grab the steering wheel and pull it up or down, there is some play - probably one of the reasons for the uneven contact. The steering column bushings have a little bit of wear, and I will be replacing them. Is there anything else I should replace or check? When I grab the steering wheel shaft in the engine bay, there seems to be a lot of movement- is this normal? The flexible coupling does not seem damaged, but does it wear out and become too flexible over time, and is this something that is normally replaced? Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks, Kevin

There is a bracket on the firewall that has a tendency to break, at least it did on my car. Other then the bushings and felts, this could be the reason for the movement you noticed from within the engine bay.

On, and no, your steering wheel should not rub on the cowl.
