TR6 TR6 Starter install wiring--Help!

I installed the starter(TRF gear reduction) and consulted the Bentley and Haynes manuals @ wiring but of course they dont show what my starter wiring looks like! Here's what I have ( my original starter has three terminals). Heavy red wire (this I know what to do with) that was connected to big terminal. A W/R (12 ga?) with lighter (18ga?) W/Y connected to 2nd post (male slip connector). Two W/O connected to third terminal. TRF tech support told me to put main red on the terminal post and to splice the 4 remaining wires together and put on 2nd terminal. I did so and when I tried to start the car, it fires right away but dies when I release the key. It seems that it would run if I kept the key turned. Dave Russell mentioned something about bypassing the relay.

This is very frustrating!
 
I think I solved my problem. I don't exactly understand how the relay works (or where it is for that matter) so I bypassed it and the car seems fine. I abandoned 3 wires to the old starter (W/O, W/O & W/Y) and just used the W/R that is the supply from the ignition switch. My problem was that the W/Y, which is an ignition wire that apparently runs through the relay and also to the Ballast resistor ignition wire, was not hot when tied to the others except when cranking the engine. The old starter must somehow have jumped thys connection after the car started (the starter had a dedicated terminal for this wire). I ran a wire from the fuse box (switched terminal) directly to the coil bypassing the relay and ballast system. Everything seems to be fine and the wire isn't getting hot. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I would be concerned that your coil, which (if original type) requires a ballast resistor or wire, is now getting too much voltage. It will work fine w/o the resistor... for awhile, but it will eventually (500 miles or so) cook your points.

I think you still need the ballast wire in there.
 
Thanks Geo. I should have mentioned that I have a Pertronix ignition with a Pertronix ignitor coil. When I put it in I sort of remember the instructions saying it was ok w/out the ballast resistor. Can anyone verify?
