I have been trying to buy new sheetmetal to fabricate dorr skin and rear deck repairs. My micrometer tells me the thickness is .045-.048, which would indicate 18 guage. Does anyone know for sure? When I showed up at the metal sales office, the man there was sure the sample from my door skin was thinner although he didn't measure it. Most people I have talked to think auto sheet metal is thinner than 18ga. I know newer cars are, but what about the TR's??

Most of the 6's body panels are 20 gauge. I know the two forward rear deck pieces are 18 (the ones on top of the "B", rear door post). I also know that the replacement floor panels are 21 gauge (I wish they were 20).

I purchased a sheet of 20 gauge metal from a sheet metal house that was harder then that used on the car. You should get ASTM-A366 which is a cold roll steel with a maximum carbon content of .10. The softer steel improves welding and forming and can bend back on itself in any direction without cracking.

A couple members on this forum prefer 18 gauge to facilitate welding.

My preference is to use a matching gauge which makes it easier to use a dolly and hammer to work the patch into to original piece.
