TR6 tr6 rear brake upgrade

Hello fellow enthusists,newbie here with a question for yas all.Has any one done a rear brake upgrade using alum.drums and Morgan 7/8 bore wheel cyl?Does it noticably improve braking? I've got a 75 Tr6, which i've owned for 17 years,have posted some pics and info under new members section.Thanks Casey
 
Just a guess, but I suspect that there's little benefit in upgrading rear brakes unless front brakes are upgraded as well, considering that the front brakes probably do 75% or more of the braking. One concern is in changing the balance of the brakes; you really don't normally want the rears locking up first!
 
I installed the Morgan/Sunbeam 7/8 bore rear slaves about 2 years ago. Direct replacement, got them from Vic Brit. Also used the grippier "Hawk" pads on the front. Distinct increase in breaking power with these two upgrades, and feels reasonably balanced, I have not noticed the backs locking up first. I don't know if using aluminium drums or cross drilled discs will give much of a benefit unless you are motor-crossing or using the breaks an awfull lot (these will reduce fade by preventing brakes getting as hot, but don't affect actual "grip" when cool). There is some weight benefit with Al drums, 7lbs? I think.

I echo what's been said about the Morgan wheel cylinders. Nice upgrade.

The aluminum drums are a nice upgrade if you autocross or road-race, other than that, they look cool. I have them.

Cross drilled rotors, at least the ones available for our cars, are for bling, bling only. They will not provide better braking and will not last as long as a solid or vented rotor given equal abuse. Cross-drilling was an old trick back in the day when the brake pads would give off gasses when they got hot. The newer compounds today don't have this problem. One big exception would engineered cross-drilled rotors (like found on a Porsche or Ferrari) designed from the ground up to be cross-drilled and are made of some pretty exotic alloys.
 
IF you are going to upgrade the rear, make sure you at least put on a set of the Hawk pads on the front. Otherwise the rear will allways lock up first. Don't ask me how I know!

Hi Opa and welcome to the forum.

I'm doing the 7/8" cylinders and Brembo aluminum drums on the rear as well, but no pics yet. I have another week or so before that will be going back together.
