TR6 TR6 Paint

First foray at site. I have a 76 tr6 that I've owned since starting college ('81). I had it repainted around '87 (?) and think it was sanded to metal but am not sure. It could use new paint and am interested in what I'm looking at ($) for a good job. Same color (racing green). I'm not interested in showing it. It is pretty much rust free with the exception of the rough coated panels under the doors (rocker panels?). Also a little bubbling at the top rear qt. panel seams but pretty minor. What are my options, strip myself, etc. Thanks.

Stob, I hate to tell you but a "little bubbling" is sign of potentially serious rust problem in this area. If you just fix it from the outside your paint job will last six months and the rust will ruin the area rapidly. You really need to get inside this area and attack the rust from the inside out. Not too tough to get inside there, pull the rear upholstery out and the trunk liner, maybe the gas tank (not that tough to do) and get inside. Too, you might want to see if there is any undercoating in the fender well, scrap it off and inspect. Sounds like your rockers as well. May just be pinholes, might need some welding and body work. But spraying over sanded rust on a Triumph is asking for trouble.

Stob,

I've been debating on how to paint my TR6 for sometime. Recently I've found a lot of help on the forums at autobodystore.com. Check it out here: AutoBodyStore Forum

The folks that own the site are very helpful whether you buy their products or not.
