TR6 TR6 Overdrive...

Hello all, I'd like to commend all of you for such a wonderful forum. As well as being helpful and informative, I have visited this site a few times and have found it to be a wonderful encyclopedia of sorts for my Triumph's needs. I'll do my best to help out and of course ask a few questions along the way. Hope I can do my best and be of help /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My question is, what is the best option for me setting up overdrive on my TR. It's a 75' TR6 with non-overdrive, I'd like to find out the best way to do such. For engine wears sake and long travels I'd like to be able to have overdrive. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome to what has to be the best forum on the web for LBC lovers! I'm sure someone will be along to answer your question. I converted my Spitfire to an Overdrive, but I just found a spit in a salvage yard and changed out the entire drive train, engine and all. What I'm wondering, and maybe someone can tell us, is whether you'd have to put in a different transmission, or would an overdrive bolt to an existing non-overdrive tranny? Since I swaped everything out, I'm not sure.

Welcome again!

Speak to the guy at quantum (quantummechanics.com)
From what I can tell he seems to be #1 in this field. I swapped a couple of emails with him about a conversion and he's on the ball for sure. I know for a fact that there is at least one happy customer here.

NFI btw.

A Laycock overdrive will bolt to a non overdrive transmission, sort-of. The tail of the tranny is removed and replaced with the overdrive, but the mainshaft of the tranny needs to be swapped out too. (thats the "sort-of" part) There may other minor things that need doing, but unless you know what you are doing you are best to give your tranny and your overdrive to a mechanic who has done this and let him marry them.
I found an OD tranny for my 80 spitfire and it was a direct bolt up job. I was told I would need to replace the driveshaft so I got the one out of the car the tranny came out of and it turned out to be identical to the one originally in my car. Overdrive cant be beat! I have a Laycock overdrive mounted behind the transfer case in my 57 Dodge Power Wagon and it makes a huge difference. I can go 50 mph now!!!

Alana's correct. I'm the happy customer and I suggest that you speak to John at Quantum before making any move. Whether you chose to buy from him or not will be your decision, but he is the most knowledgeable individual regarding this matter. That is a well recognized fact here and at 6-Pack, CCBCC, NEBCC and on and on. John is as honest as the day is long so feel free to ask away with any question.

Good luck,

Trevor,
I drive a 73 TR6 that had only a 4-speed and was totally frustrated with long trips cruising at 3+K rpm. I researched vendors out there that add on overdrives for the big Triumph and the only name that consistantly came up was John Esposito at Quantum. I pulled the tranny (really only takes about 1 hour to do, sorta), built a coffin with 3/4" plywood and shipped her to John. I installed the J-type which is "correct" for your car. Save the expense (much closer to 2 thou than you care to think - shipping, box, etc.), I am very happy with my decision. I did have some glitches which John stood behind me on completely. I now cruise at 70mph turning 2200rpm. My engine is happy and I am happy. Plus I have added value to my car. The TR6 is making a huge resurgense in popularity and many believe that it will be the next AH 3000, though not attaining the same atmospheric pricing. An overdrive TR6 will always be worth about $1500 more than the non-overdrive car, all things equal.

Thank you all for your input, I will take it all into consideration as I venture into this project at a date yet to be determined. And I will also check out the quantum mechanics, seems to be the best option.
