TR6 TR6 Manifold Gaskets

Here's a question for you TR6 experts! I notice that there are two types of manifold gaskets for the TR6 motor in my 1974 TVR. One has a metallic finish on one side and an asbestos looking material on the other side. The other one has asbestos looking material on both sides. Which one is better? If I use the one with one metallic side, which end goes towards the block? Thanks in advance!

Bruce

Can't tell you which is better. If both head and manifold surfaces have excellent finishes, I don't see where it would make a difference. As for which side goes where, I believe it specifies on the gasket itself. If I remember right, the asbestos side faces out. This would allow the manifolds to bed down a little better.

Doug,
The gasket doesn't specify and I know I read it somewhere, but I can't remember where.

Jeff,
Thanks for the info. It does make sense that it would go on that way.

Now the big decision is which one to use.

Thanks again,
Bruce

Bruce,
If the gasket that you refer to as having asbestos-looking material on both sides is indeed only a fiber gasket with no metal in it, I would stay away from this type. They are often refered to as "header" gaskets because they are thicker than stock and are designed to crush down and make up for the fact that most headers do not fit flush. This all-fiber or paper gasket will last you about 6 months before it burns out. Stick with stock metallic gaskets. I sprayed a little copper on my stock gasket to improve the seal. Questionable if that did any good. I have headers (good ones, ie, they fit) and I have no leaks.

Bill,
The gasket is the one supplied by TRF for the 72-76 TR6. It actually has a metal center with the "asbestos-looking" surface on the outsides. I would think that this would be better.

Sounds good, Bruce.

If it is all fiber and kind of a yellowish white, avoid that one.

I went with all-metal locking nuts (one brand is Cleve Nut) to get a little more grip, as well as use a split washer.
