TR6 TR6 Leaking oil gallery plug

Need some sage advice on this. This is the oil gallery plug above the oil filter, and iot has developed a healthy leak. It does not appear to have been peened over, and it does appear to have had a slot cut in it at one time, but said slot is abit mangled. What is my best approach for elimintaing this leak? If it means replacing the plug waht is the best wat to attack it. I think the picture shows that a few threads are exposed.
Thanks!!

Maybe just no one who has read your post yet. I certainly haven't.

What is the access like? (I'm assuming this is your TVR) If it doesn't take too much disassembly, I would be inclined to go ahead and remove the plug (drill it if necessary), then tap the hole for a regular socket-head pipe plug. That is the recommended solution for similar plugs on the TR3 motor.

But if that isn't feasible, I would probably try to enlarge the slot (eg Dremel with an abrasive cutout blade) enough to clean it up, and then try to drive the plug back in deeper. Turn it with a screwdriver (right angle screwdriver if that is all that will get in there) as far as it will go, and then start bashing it with a BFH.

Another option, if you can get the plug out, is to use one of the expanding rubber plugs sold for oil pans with ruined threads. Available at your FLAPS in a variety of sizes. I used one on my TR3A oil pan for quite a few years, and it worked well for me.

Those plugs are aluminum and are available from the roadster factory

Thanks for the response Randall. My apologies for seeming impatient. It's pretty close quarters in that area. Even with the fuel pump and oil filter out of the way I don't think there would be enough room to get a drill in there, or even a SFH. That seems to leave me with the option of improving the slot with a Dremel and working from that point. My first question is, should the first step be to try to tighten the plug to see if that resolves the leak before attempting to remove it? Or, should I try to remove it first and if that fails, then try to tighten? If I am able to remove it, and I opt to tap for the pipe fitting, what is the danger of filings getting in the motor? Will greasing the tap minimize that sufficiently?

I had not heard of expanding rubber plugs. Interesting option. I assume heat would not be an issue for that option?

I was placiong an order with TRF anyway so went ahead adn included PU1404 in case that was the needed solution

TIA

Ed-

You can get a hex head plug with the same threads if it helps with accessibility - I was planning to do that with my TR4 but left the aluminum plugs in place. I know people tap to npt, but if you are worried about tapping, you could stick with the same threading and just make sure you use a decent sealant.
