TR6 TR6 kidney pad installation help please

Ok, I know this should be simple, but how do you install the kidney pads? Never had them in my TR6 before, so I am not quite sure. Just got through busting one of the ones I made where it is skinniest when I tried to flex it a little to fit the bracket onto the center console. Luckily I have a extra. Any tips? Thanks, Kevin
 
Isn't that what the metal piece you needed does?

You should not have to bend them so much as to break anything if the metal support is in place across the center. Do you have a picture of where you placed it as well as the area where it broke?
 
Here is a picture of the board and bracket for the passenger side I made. I wanted to make sure it fit before I upholstered it. The one pad that came with the car was not installed, so I am not sure if it is even correct. I broke the first pad right in the center where the center support would go. The problem I ran into was that the large metal bracket has to slide onto the center console. There is almost no room to back it up so that I can slide it one. Other than removing the console, sliding on the kidney pads, and then putting the center console back in, I don't see how else to do it. Even though I don't have everything in, I don't see how the kidney pad will even fit on the passenger side since heater hoses are in the way. I plan on tearing out the dash to rebuild my heater shortly (thanks for the article, Paul) but I just want to make sure everything fits first. Any thoughts?

Kevin, nothing personal , but you used the wrong type of board.
 
They used hardboard on the one that was with the car - it has an English stamp on it, so I figured there was a good chance it was original. What are they made out of normally? Seems like if it were made out of thing plywood to begin with, you wouldn't need the metal bracket that attaches the two. Mine is a 69, and many times I find it has more in common with a 250 than a TR6.

Kevin, I think mine are also hardboard or 'masonite'. Your pattern may be the wrong size. It should easily hook into the front console and push up into place. It will also easily fit in under the heater vent hoses. There should also be a screw at the back to secure it (in addition to the screw that goes into the cross piece pictured above.
 
Hardboard is old Material .I use MDF or MDO,Always forget which is which. It won't get soft and crumble on you. Got mine fronm the big box store.

Here's the shift boot for the Wedge.
Also gonna use it for a backing piece for the 6's boot back board.
