Hello Everyone,
I figured out the placement of the horns (a used horn I bought had the permanent bracket reversed), I have both horns working when hooked up directly to the battery, and the solid purple lines leading to the horns are hot. The horns still do not work when I depress the horn button in the steering wheel. I had the steering wheel taken apart once to clean all the parts. I figure the problem is still in the steering wheel, but I can not figure it out what I am missing. Any suggestions?

Try turning the steering wheel from lock to lock whilst honking the horn (or attempting to honk the horn, in your case). A lot of times, the circular brass plate that the horn dumaflatchie rides against is either corroded or even warped. If you get a honk somewhere in the process, you will need to take all that mechanism back out and see what is or isn't making contact. Is your spring-loaded contact plunger (dumaflatchie) new? These little things break with abandon. Too, there are two different lengths to chose from. Perchance, did you replace this device and maybe bought the wrong length? The only thing you can do is use trial and error with this setup, starting with your horns, the wiring, the relay, etc. until you determine where the gremlin is hiding. Frustrating but doable.

Thanks Bill. I forgot to mention my TR6 is a 69. There is no relay. I turned the steering wheel back and forth while trying pushing down on the horn button - still nothing. I did buy a new plunger, since there was none present. I measured for the correct plunger before I ordered. It appeared to make all necessary contacts. I am going to take it all apart (I sure am getting faster at tearing apart and putting things back together in this car). I'll let you know what happens.

IIRC the horn push makes the ground connection for horns. I had just the opposite problem: play in the column made the horn sound when turning the whell past the 2 oclock position.
Check that the ground strap at the rubber coupling is in place.
Also, with the horn button off use a test lamp on the hot wire connection to the back of the button to see if there is current there.
 
I just spent a few hours with my horn....Was working when I got the car a month ago, no it's out...I took the steerwheel apart cleaned everthing, inspected everything...once convinced everything was good I tried again...No go /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.....My son just came in and asked if I checked the fuse.....DUH! So I guess thats where I'll start tomorrow.
 
Got mine working today....Was dirty contacts on the relay...Isn't it funny how it works fine for 30 years until the car comes into my possession then all of a sudden the contacts go south and I waste a day messing with it.
 
Kevin- Make sure you have all the ground straps on the steering column connected. a common horn not working answer. Did you get the CD?

I only have two things left to sort out with my electrical system - the amp gauge and horns. So, sorry to dredge this up again, but I am still stumped on the horns. At this point, I am suspecting the horn push. How can I test it to make sure? As a review, here is what I do know: 1)The horns work when hooked up directly to the battery now. 2)The purple/black wires at the point they contact each horn are hot. 3) When I run a test lead from the spring loaded horn contact to the nut securing the steering wheel, the test light lights up. 4)from what I can tell from my two books, there is no relay on a '69. 5)There was no horn contact brush when I bought the car, so I bought a 3 1/4 inch horn brush which appears to make the correct contact to the horn push for this year car. I am no electricain; does anyone have any further suggestions? Thanks for all your help, guys.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to give an update. My horns are working! I cleaned all contact points and had to take apart the horns to get them to work. The final culprit? The horn push contact was bent and was not making full contact. Thanks again for all your help, guys. My only electrical problem left is the amp gauge.
