TR6 TR6 engine rebuilding sources

Getting ready to lift the body of my '71 TR6 for a frame off restoration. I'm looking for comments/recomendations on engine and head rebuilding vendors. I've already identified a handful; TRF, PAECO, UK Motorsports, British Sports Car Center and Motorhead. Any comments on these vendors and or recomendations for others. I'm located in Charlotte, NC so a local/regional vendor would be best.

At the risk of invoking the wrath of our fellow listers, I would think that Charlotte would have several qualified shops to do the work you require. Personally I am hesitant to farm out work like this to someone I do not know, I want that face-to-face contact (alright, I am old fashioned!).

While I am not saying that all gasoline-powered internal combustion engines are the same, they are similar. Yes, there are certain 'quirks' to every manufacturer and even within a manufacturers' product lines, but I am sure that you have someone in your backyard with the ability to handle the task. A local shop may not have the parts availability of those that you mention, but most of the folks in that business have pretty good resources. Here in the land of Saturday-night dirt track late-model and outlaw races we have two shops within a short distance that have done very nice work on Triumph engines, heads and transmissions.

If you do decide to go local, get references and check them out. Set a standard of quality that you expect them to provide. If you want special bearings, let them know that you will not accept anything less. One nice thing about dealing with someone in your area is 'service after the sale', not only for (heaven forbid) warranty issues but also helpful info that they have and are willing to share. That and no huge shipping fees.

I agree with Don, yes there are plenty places that you can ship your engine to. I found an engine shop in High Point that can do everything that I wanted except line boring for cam bearings, which apparently not a lot of machine shops have a machine that can bore a hole 2.9xx inches in diameter, but he was able to source this from a machine shop that specializes in diesel engines. So it pays to do a little research.

The previous posters probably know more about this subject than I, but in additon, I've found that it's prudent to find a builder who is fluent with restoration and repair of LBCs. And if you can locate one, preferably it would be someone with specific experience in Triumph engine building.

There are a lot of nuances with the Triumph 2.5 that only an experienced Triumph mechanic would know. The right cam, use of cam bearings, flowing the heads, the right carburation, how the engine interacts with the drivetrain, etc., etc.

A mechanic who is equipped with this knowledge can not only build a more efficient engine for your TR, he can save you money.

I'd practically guarantee there's such a person, and probably several, in the Charlotte area. Dig around, you'll find 'em.
