TR6 TR6 electric fan

After a hot summer here in TX, I'm thinking its time to add in an electric fan to help cool things down somewhat. I think I have all the details sorted (wiring, thermo-switch etc), so now its down to choosing the fan. Any recommendations?

I wouldn't mind going with the 16" PermaCool a la hottr6 - https://www.hottr6.com/triumph/tr6fan.html - but I'm worried about clearance issues between the radiator and the front frame rail. Would a 14" fan provide sufficient cooling?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

It will all depend upon the fan depth. You could get clearance issues with a 10" fan if you chose the wrong one. Any retailer selling multiple choices of fans, like JEGS or Summit, will also list the mounting depth needed for clearance.

I used a Hayden 16" fan and it fit. Just a warning. Stay away from those thru the radiator thermo sensors. After time they can damage the radiator and cause it to leak. Of course there will be those that say they have used them for years w/o any problems. Guess it depends how lucky you are feeling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Mark,
Check out spalusa.com for a selection of the some of the finest fans made.

Guys,

Thanks for the prompt replys, as ever. The Spal fans look great, although they seem to have high current draws compared to others I've looked at.

I agree on the sensor issue. I'm getting the stainless steel lower radiator hose piece from Moss UK; this has a threaded plug for a temperature switch or sender pre-installed.

Cheers again,
Mark

I actually bought a perma cool with plans to install, but then ran across a thread discussing the attributes of the Spal brand. Check out www.the-fan-man.com and look for Spal electric fans part 0400, 16" and only 2.05 inches deep.

Spal makes an excellant relay wiring kit that is built to a much higher quality than your stock harness, and is installed totally independant of said harness. That said, I do have a Delco-style alternator, gel battery and have the fan wired totally independant of my stock harness. I am using a 16" Spal "puller" fan and have eliminated the stock crank fan. Plus I ran the Spal stainless sensor into the lower stainless coolant pipe, as you plan, and wired a manual override. Works good.

This is to go in as a fall/winter upgrade associated with the (hopefully clean!) install of Dan Masters' uprated wiring block and harness. So there should be no worries there, although the circuit that the fan relay is on is only fused to 20 A, which may limit options unless I either installed a different fuse (not recommended) or a completely separate circuit as Bill suggests.... I'll also be adding in a fan eliminator.

An overview of my cooling setup.

Bill, your engine compartment is too clean and shiny! Great job in there. I love that radiator. Is that one of the new lightweight aluminum TRF units?

Bill,

That truly is a sight to behold. Whilst probably illustrating my ignorance, what is the metal cannister below the brake master cylinder?

Mark

First, the radiator is a Ron Davis Racing aluminum radiator, built to exact TR6 specs and the canister is the GoodParts oil separator that I relocated to that position.
