TR6 TR6 Driveshaft ... Cork Washer

I'm told this washer (seal) is no longer available from main suppliers. Tried making one out of rubber but that binds. The cork I have is a little thin but I don't think that is a major issue in terms of sealing dust out and grease in, but would be better if closer to original thickness for durability. Looks like original washer was about 3/16 thick and tapered to fit against the spline. Anyone know of a source of this washer? Certainly not a standard size for range of punches I have so I guess it will have to be hand cut or I'll have to devise a one-off cutter for both diameters that are needed. Anyone have luck making it out of other materials? Needs to be flexible enough to stretch over splines, but rigid enough not to bind and bend when sliding on shaft. Thinking some sort of telfon/plastic material might work well and could perhaps be made on drill press or wood lathe. Experiences and suggestions most welcome.

Edit: Here is a picture of what I'm talking about

Haven't tried it, but seems to me that valve stem packing should work well.

leather sounds like a great idea, bet the factory would have use leather but cork must have been cheaper, just my thoughts

Leather is a great idea. Should have thought of that.

Was not familiar with valve stem packing, but Gooogle search suggests it would work too.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mike

Mike I did mine out of 1/4" thick cork. Have plenty left, would be happy to send you some if you would like to use it.

Buy my 1/4" cork by 1oo' rolls. I have plenty if anybody needs any.
