TR6 TR6 distributor issue

I was adjusting the timing on my newly purchased 72 TR6 and it just quit. I thought that maybe the points were the problem & my neighbor who is a mechanic came over to assist. He said that the upper distributor shaft should sit into distributor drive off-set slot better than it currently is. He re-seated it, properly set the timing and secured the bolt. He's concerned that it should sit deeper in the assembly and may pop out while driving. Thoughts???

The slot in the distributor shaft is offset and it should be installed with distributor in the correct offset. Have a look at the Bently manual to see the correct orientation.

This may help....

At times the base of the dist. can get a burr making the mounting collar want to ride too low.
Remove it and clean it up and mount the collar to it snuggly. Now re-install the beast ,loosen
the collar and set the timing.
If you have trouble on the install look for problems with the dog.Could be worn from long misalignment.
