has any one installed a convertable top on a TR6, it doesnt appear to be too hard a job. I have ordered the top and deciding to try to install myself or take it to someone, any comments/ suggestions?

Hondo, Yes I have installed a new top on my TR6. It is not really hard just very time comsuming. My best advise is to be paitent, take your time and get someone to help you. it is not a one man job.

Hey Hondo,
I installed the top on my TR6 twice (first one got vandalized). I had never done anything like that before and said how hard can it be. Wasn't that tough but was very time consuming. Took me a whole weekend. Measure once, measure twice and then measure again. Remember to do it in the bright sun so that the top material is nice and warm and you get the maximum stretch, even if it is the Sunfast material (which I highly recommend). Also, I used the King Richard automatic snap tool which made the job, well, a snap. I did it by myself, wasn't that bad. Make sure that you use the 3M yellow adhesive, it is in my opinion, the best.

thanks bill, where did you get the automatic snap tool I have been looking and cannot get a hit on google

That's it, Alan. I got the Press-N-Snap tool, a little pricey at $135 but what a charm to use! Make sure that you only use Dot brand snaps, stainless and brass. I used the stainless on the outside and the black on the inside. Also, I got from Dot some extra-strong grip snaps for the outside so they won't come undone so easily. (not really that hard to do or undo but just little better grip). On my original top (vinyl) I used the extra long Dot snaps and placed two layers of vinyl top material behind the snap as a backup (little circles of top material) because the top has a tendancy to want to stretch. Didn't have to do that with the Sunfact material as it is so much tougher. Properly set (they are adjustable) the King Richard snap tool will give you a perfect snap in about 1 second, in virtually any position, with one hand tied behind you, in the dark.....

Is this the consensus? Robbins, Everflex and Sunfast are advertised by TRF... any other material choices?

(I'm just collecting information when one day I'll be in a position to replace the top on my TR4A... after I redo everything else... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

Those are all Robbins brands. Sunfast has a canvas outer layer and it is really tough, good-looking material. I had the other Robbins (middle grade) brand and the Sunfast is far superior..

Try Prestiege Tops. I put on the Mohair and I get nothing but compliments, and the price is right too.
