TR6 TR6 Alternator Overcharging

All,
Working on the TR and am puzzled. When I first start her up, voltmeter reads high, ~17 volts and external meter confirms reading. After I drive for a while, sometimes 15 minutes, sometime never, the voltage will drop to normal around 13.5. The overcharge seems like a regulator but a solid state unit usually does not "fix" itself. Any ideas on where to start?

My first step would be to double check your voltmeter accuracy. Nothing more frustrating than a meter that lies! Then check right at the alternator's output and at the sense terminal if it has one.

If it is really going to 17 volts, then the problem has to be inside the alternator.
