TR6 TR6 air filter element replacements for stock housing

I don't remember where I got my previous set of filters but they were constructed in the standard fashion with pleated filter paper, plastisol vinyl orange top and bottom sealing surfaces and a ring of stout perforated sheet metal on the ID and the OD.

I had to replace my filters (stock housing without original sealing rings) and sourced some from a low budget west coast online supplier. Their ID came in 1/2" undersize when compared with the housing's formed up features that were supposed fit into the ID of the filter. There's no way the filters would stretch that much.

I looked at locally available parts, got a pair of WIX 42155 which are what WIX specifies for the TR6. They are similar construction to the ones I was trying to replace but they lacked the inner and outer perforated sheet metal rings. They also seemed to be slightly thicker and sure enough, after installing them, the pleated filter material collapsed because they had no rigidity when compared with my old ones that were well supported by the metal ID and OD perforated rings. So I looked at other manufacturer's. Some of the online pictures of FRAM filters show them with wire mesh on the OD, some have wire mesh on the ID and some pictures show no mesh at all.

I started looking around and it seems like there's been a general consolidation of filters in the industry and some applications folks at the large companies have made some compatibility decisions that mean air filters from the big boys really aren't a good fit.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised but has anyone come across this situation?

I use K&N elements in my stock housing, with the snorkels. I ducted to the front opening for fresh air.

I used 4a elements, better breathing, save weight, not much different in price. URL=https://s207.photobucket.com/user/grglmn/media/newcarbs.jpg.html]

I had a similar issue recently…I bought the same Wix product and also realized they were
too thick. What you'll find though is that if you sand the ridges off the Wix filters they fit just fine.
It's a pain…I used a 12" stationary disc sander and it took about 15 minutes. It's those ridges
around the inside hole…on both front and back that need to be sanded flush. As for next time?
I'm thinking maybe Roadster Factory? Anyway…good luck!!
