New contributions to water pump question

Hi all
tJust putting together an engine that hadn't been run in many (30+) years. The water pump pulley does not snug down and flops around. I notice that the pump shaft extends out too far. Is the pump shaft tapered? If so, I will probably have to replace both the pump and the pulley.
Maybe I can epoxy them together till the pump gives out but I don't really like this idea.
Thanks

It's possible that the pulley has come loose but that's what they do when the bearing fails. Most likely the pulley is still on the shaft. Need new/rebuilt pump.

The pulley is held in place by the nut on the end plus a key on the shaft. If it is loose I would NOT recommend trying to repair it unless it is just the loose nut on the end. The shaft is not tapered. Over tightening the belt will lead to the failure of the unit. I have had the pulley just get loose on the shaft and wear the shaft down. This is a throw away unit at that point.

The pulley must be a light press fit onto the shaft; otherwise the nut on the end will not be able to hold it together for long. If the fit is loose, replace both of them. Because of the way the pulley is constructed, there is a lot of force on the pulley/shaft joint and it moves as the pulley turns. It must be absolutely solid or the pulley will fret against the shaft leading to failure for both of them. And you really don't want the pulley flying around loose, so close to the radiator & fan! (Fortunately my electric fan has a guard so the pulley didn't do any other damage.)

If the fit is only a little bit loose and you want to try a temporary work-around, I would suggest something like Loctite 638 or perhaps 620 retaining compound. Epoxy isn't going to be strong enough. If the shaft extends out too far, I would add steel washers as necessary (again only as a temporary work-around).

My guess is that you'll spend as much on shipping as you save on the price of the parts. I got my stock-type pump & pulley from TRF and I'm quite happy with them.

I've tried the 5 and 6 vane pumps in the past, when I was having cooling problems, and never could tell that they made any difference at all. Probably just shows that my problem was not lack of water flow, so YMMV.

PS, don't forget that the one bolt has to be installed through the pump before installing the pulley. That is, assuming you haven't substituted a stud for the bolt. I installed the stud long ago when using an aftermarket pump with integral pulley, but decided I liked it that way.

57.75 Pounds includes shipping. Equals $88 US. Contrast to TRF $113 not including shipping. Save about $35. I just wonder about quality. Anyone tried them out?
I just did a bit of google on MEV and apparently they do deliver the goods but never answer emails, phone calls etc so I would figure them to be iffy. They do take Paypal so there is some leverage. I guess if I lived in the good old blighty (home of those great sports cars) I would give them a try. From the US, not so sure.

The cheaper ones are available here also. BPNW for instance has it for 69.95. I assume a far east knockoff, as is the British pump, most likely. Tom

Yeah. I looked at BPNW. Lucas Brand but probably chinese mfg under license (or maybe black mkt). $103 before shipping. My fear is that I hear there is some mismatch problem between aftermkt pumps and pulleys.
Apparently the Moss units are also subject to this. There is some guy named John in Deleware who specializes in Jags but does other british water pump rebuilds. Awaiting his call back
Rimmer Bros. 501488 . Can't tell if it comes with the gasket, woodruff key, nut and washer

On sale at BPNW for $69.82, I think. I've bought several things from Rimmer Bros lately. Takes only a week and shipping is no more than domestic. They also answer phone inquiries promptly. I do like the rebuild option best, not the cheapest though. Tom
