Which trim are you referring to - the fender beading or the side strips on the front fenders and the doors? Both are pretty stiff so you shouldn't have to worry about them corkscrewing.

Use a bondo spreader ( plastic pad) against the paint, then use a flat blade scewdriver or stiff metal putty spreader on the plastic spreader to go underneath the SS trim and pop it off. You will get the hang of finding the little buttons that hold the trim on. Not hard to do at all.

I believe you are just talking about the side trim on the front fender and door correct? I agree that just finding the buttons and gently prying with a plastic putty knife should work fine. I can't recall if you have loosen the side marker assemblies or not or if the front fender ones will slip out without doing so (I seem to recall getting some out without removing the assembly from a parts car.).
For the fender beading, I believe you'll need to loosen the fender bolts and straighten the flat tabs on the trim to get them out cleanly. This also may involve removing the rear tailight assemblies as well. Sorry but I did this about 25 years ago so it's been a while and my cars at the time were totally stripped both coming apart and being reassembled.

Scott, you are right, wasn't thinking about the fender beading. You do have to loosen the fender fasteners to get the beading out. That can be a big job. I'd suggest putting car on lift, remove all wheels and have at it. The beading tabs will have to be straightened (duckbill pliers work well) before pulling out. Believe I would put 2" masking tape down on each side of beading before pulling beading to protect paint.
