TR4/4A TR4A muffler hanger to cross member attachment

I'm looking for a picture or drawing of how the middle rubber muffler hanger is attached to the frame cross member. Can't seem to find this detail anywhere online.

Thanks,
Moe Morin

Not completely certain what you mean with the term "middle rubber muffler hanger". If it's #2 in the first photo, then refer to the second photo (ignoring the fact that it's of a TR4 - they still are placed the same). The bracket's place is on the right side and below of the transmission mount (that's it just below the number 8).

No... the forward hanger is at the muffler. I neglected to mention this is a "cross box" type muffler. The hanger is attached to the intermediate tail pipe clamp where the pipe plugs into the muffler, just below the frame cross member. There is nothing obvious there to bolt the rubber hanger to. I assume there should be a bracket or something that attaches to the cross member for the rubber hanger to bolts to.

Thanks,

Hanger mounts to rear cross member that the rear shocks and Differential are mounted to. Approx 2-3 inches from shock mount towards diff.near the top of cross member.
A real bear to get at. Seems to me if you remove muffler completely it gives a little more wiggle room. Not much room between trunk and cross member.See attachment, mounting bolt is between #80 diff. mount and shock mount.

Great info... but, #79 & #80 appear to be mounting studs for IRS, mine has a solid axle. The cross members only have holes for the studs.

It seems odd to me that the exhaust hanger mounting is not detailed. A picture of the mounting bracket on a car with solid axle and a cross box setup would probably be best. Do you know anyone who might have this arrangement, and would be kind enough to take a picture for me?

Thanks,
Moe Morin

I thought the live axle cars came with twin resonator pipes out the rear with a muffler in the middle of the car....

Actually it's the other way. Solid axle cars had the single system and IRS had the dual system. I've owned my 66 IRS since 1969 and it came with the dual system. Both systems work with either IRS or solid axle and have been interchanged over the years by replacement systems. I also read where the aftermarket started the confusion and it's just carried on for all these years.

I have seen it in parts catalogs and other material both ways, so it is hard to tell. My IRS had the dual system in 1980 when I got it, but who knows how original that was. I have a muffler for a TR250 on it now.

Just checked my SPC and it shows that the dual system was supplied up to ??? Comm # and the single system is after ??? Comm #. Only trouble is that it does not list the Comm #'s. So this would seem to indicate that either solid or IRS cars were supplied with the same system before and after a cut off point.

But who really cares. Mine is a hybred with the 2 rear mufflers and the solid pipe from the single system in place of the forward muffler. Interesting thing is mine is SS and a friend has the same set up but with mild steel. His is much louder than mine.

Moe,

Jerry has it right. Cars up to around CTC70000 had dual exhaust while cars after that should have had the later single exhaust. It didn't have anything to do with IRS or sold axle despite one of the vendor's catalogs indicating that.

Only the later cars will have the extra bracket welded to the frame to support the front hanger for the single exhaust. Note that they kept both of the rear hangers though for the dual exhaust so a later car could have been retrofitted with the dual exhaust.

I have both an IRS and Solid Axle IRS. Before going on--I feel like a spoiled, lucky SOB. Two of the best affordable sports cars ever made.

On both of my cars there are little brackets welded stock to the rear tubular frame support beneath the trunk. Small steel hangar brackets appear there, and the rubber hangars attach to those. Works very well.

I'll try to post a pic if that will help.

Of course, there are no rubber hangars toward the front. Just that snug fit where the steel bracket hangs from the transmission cross member bracket.

Moe,

Here's a picture of the rear mounts for my post-CTC70000 TR4A which shows the single muffler bracket on the far left and the 2 dual muffler brackets which shows they kept those as well even after they moved to the single muffler. Obviously, someone installed dual mufflers on my car later but you can see they left the rubber hangers for the single muffler (the front one is just visible at the edge of the picture to the right of the differential).

Here's a picture of the front mount for the single muffler. Sorry for the poor quality but these were taken with my cell phone while reaching up under the car.

I confirmed that my pre-CTC700000 TR4A does not have the extra bracket on the rear tubular support under the trunk.
