hey guys, I have to pull the head this weekend to replace what I hope is a bad gasket and not a cracked head.It seems pretty straight forward, but I can't find TWO misplaced manuals. any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated... thanx!
It's pretty obvious, nothing special. Drain the coolant, remove the thermostat housing, rocker shaft, pushrods, manifolds. ISTR the book says to remove the carbs & disconnect the exhaust; but it seems quicker and easier to me to just leave the whole assembly hanging on the exhaust pipe and stick a chunk of wood between the manifolds & head (so the manifolds clear the studs). Undo the head nuts, lift the head off.
If you want, you can download a copy of the TR3 factory workshop manual from https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B2H2NJt3...hYmRl&hl=en (although you may need to create a Google account first). Of course there are lots of detail differences, but it's basically the same motor.
I also leave the carbs & manifolds assembly intact and pull it back.
This pic is from the TR3A but it shows a couple of things:
Using big washers, long sockets and nuts on two of the studs will clamp the cylinder liners in place so there in no chance one of them will lift up when you are messin' with things.
Cereal box cardboard over the wells for the cam are there so I don't drop some stray item in there.
I had to undo the coil and heater pipe bracket to get the head past the pipe (may just be that way on mine).
On the TR3A I had to moce the fuel line between the carbs and partially disconnect the chike linkage to have clearance at the inner wing to pull the carbs back -- do not recall if the TR4 needed this.
Good opportunity to decoke the tops of the pistons... that must be what I was getting ready to do when the pic was snapped.
