TR4/4A TR4A Fuel Starvation problem: Dry float bowls

Hi folks. Sorting out the TR4A who starts and runs fine, but over 2000 rpm has a fuel starvation issue. She idles fine, and starts fine, just doesn't get enough fuel over 2,000 RPM.

Pulled the ZS carbs tonight with a friend and the float bowls were totally dry. Bone dry. I wouldn't have thought that it would run without the fuel in the float bowls.

Fuel pressure seems OK, and the lines are open to both float chambers.

Any ideas as to the issue?

Does not sound like a carb problem to me - I'd look for an inlet line restriction/weak fuel pump. But since my rear carb has the exact opposite problem and is leaking all over I may not be correct here!

Good luck

Fuel pump checked out, so we finished cleaning everything and put her back together.

She is running pretty well now, maybe she had just sat for too long and cleaning/disaasembling is what was needed.

Thanks again for the ideas and helping out!

I guess by now you have checked the fuel filter. Also, you might want to take a look in the gas tank and see if you have any sediment that has colleted around the outlet of the gas tank. Sometimes that sediment can loosen up and allow fuel to flow under light loads for a short while but when full throttle increases the flow, the sediment will tightly surround the tank outlet cutting the fuel supply to the pump.

Jim - it looks like you are actually pretty close to me. Let me know next time you come up over the Ortega Highway, coffee or beer is on me.

My TR4A has the old style glass bowl filter and screen, which were pretty gunky, but I did clean those up. Tank looks OK too, but these are good things for me to double check. I'll do that later today.

Thanks again folks!
