TR4/4A TR4A Clutch Return Spring ???

Im replacing my clutch slave cylinder and there was no return spring or return spring anchor plate. The Moss catalog shows this part but my TR4A parts catalog doesnt. Did late TR4A's have a return spring? Also do I adjust the slave cylinder push rod before or after filling the cylinder with fluid? Thanks

I believe the Moss catalog is wrong on this point. The TR4A switched to the 'diaphragm' clutch (ala TR6) and at the same time switched away from pulling the TOB back a bit to letting it ride on the pressure plate all the time. There should actually be a spring inside the slave cylinder that lightly pushes against the TOB all the time.

They were supplied with an adjustable pushrod (same part used on earlier TRs), but it should not need periodic adjustment. The spring inside the slave is supposed to allow for clutch wear. Unfortunately, the manuals seem to assume that the factory setting will never be disturbed and fail to mention where to set the pushrod. I'd set it for about 1/4" travel, unless you later find that isn't enough. No need to fill the system first, but you will need to compress that internal spring (force the piston all the way in) to measure the 1/4".
