TR4/4A TR4a clutch recommendations

Tom,

I don't have an answer for you as my last clutch replacement was 25 years ago but I'm interested in what you go with and how it turns out for future work on my cars. I looked through my receipts but can't find where I purchased my clutch but I can tell you that it took a lot of effort to work. I didn't have any issues with it other than that though.

There was this brief discussion on TR6 clutches a while back which should be applicable to our TR4A's as well.

I just replied to a new thread and saw this. I said:

I have a LUK with original type throwout bearing. TRF part RFK747. They have a nice brass bushing for the throwout bearing. So far, so good.
The effort is fine, not stiff. After I bought it pulled out the old type Borg and Beck which I should probably have just put back in. Oh well, a spare.

Borg & Beck 10 years and 8,000 miles ago. Works excellent but, pedal is quite heavy. Easy to pop the clutch inadvertently if you're not paying attention.

Just a thought, Tom, if your old clutch was in fair condition and just worn; you might consider having it reconditioned instead of buying new. My FLAPS can have the friction plate relined and the pressure plate reconditioned for considerably less than half the cost of new. And with all the concerns over new parts these days (several of our local club members have had "new" friction plates come apart now), I have to think that reconditioned parts are at least as good.

For that matter, I've never actually worn out a TR clutch, except by TOB failure. And the TOB that failed was an aftermarket unit.

Having put in a fair number of these little guys for customers and friends. I would suggest the TRF magic kit. There are a lot of clutches out there and some work better(smoother) than others.
Randal makes a good point too, if it just needs a disc and TOB,why not re-use the OE??.Just make sure you clean and inspect it,they do wear out.Watch the fingers for wear from the TOB.Inspect the plate for any signs of galding scoring or heating(can warp)......
