TR4/4A TR4A Brake Master Connector Leak

Ok all,

I installed a TRW/Lucas brake master in my TR4A. I purchased it from BP Northwest, quality seems excellent.

I'm having a real odd leak. The outlet for the pipe that goes to the splitter is leaking. I thought I had a bad line, so I purchased a new one from Moss, and it's still leaking. Originally, I know there was like a coupling that went in between the line and the master cylinder. I can get the coupling, but I don't know where to get the original brake line! I suspect this is my problem, but if I can seal the line up from Moss I'd be open to doing that too.

Any thoughts???

I believe the coupling was a thread adapter, for MCs that had larger outlet openings than the brake line (1/4" instead of 3/16" IIRC). If your line fits snugly into the opening, then I don't think you need the coupling.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help solve the leak.

Look carefully into the MC opening (with the line removed of course) and check the shape of the seat. It may be tapered either into, or out of, the MC. Now check that the flare on the end of the line matches that shape. If the seat points into the MC, you need a line with a "bubble" flare.

If the seat points out, the line should have a "double" flare.

Also check that threading the nut in just finger-tight will hold the line with no looseness. If not, then likely the nut doesn't match the MC. The original MC I believe had SAE threads, but used a special British nut with an extended tip. Like this:

Yeah, that top fitting, the silver one, is the type of fitting that's on my line. I'll have to pull out the actual line itself to see what the flare specifically looks like.

That bottom fitting is the kind of fitting that goes into the fuel pump!

Moss Motors is going to get a (polite) phone call about this one. I'm not upset, but the part is obviously wrong.

Thank you!
