TR4/4A TR4 Wire Wheel Adapter Removal

I had a hard enough time removing the rear W/W adapters and am now stuck on the front ones. What is the best way to remove them when the car is up on jack stands?
 
The easiest way - an air impact wrench. Actually these are pretty cheap these days (assuming you already have the compressor) and make that great "pit stop" sound.

Otherwise you can gerry rig a large wrench on one nut from the wheel to the ground as a brace to stop the wheel turning - and then work on one of the other adapter nuts. Perhaps someone else has a better method though.

I had the same problem with with my wire wheel adaptors. Believe it or not, but my 1/2" air impact tool could not take them off. I finally got desperate and pulled out of my toolbox one of these impact tools (yes, it's 3/8" drive) put a socket on it and gave it a hardy whack with a BFH. All the nuts loosened up without a problem. Mine's a Snap-On driver that I've had for years that alway seems to work. I don't know how good other brands are, but its a useful tool for loosening stubborn fittings, especially phillips head screws, as it doesn't mess up the head.

Edit: BTW, they are reversible, so you can use them to tighten bolts and screws when confronted with the same situation such as the wire wheel adaptors wanting to rotate.
 
I usually cut a piece of 2 x 4 to fit between the floor and the adaptor nut, with the nut being at around the 9:00 position. This leaves another nut on top that I can wrench toward the 2 x 4. As each nut loosens, rotate and prop the 2 x 4 on the next nut. The same procedure can be used to tighten the nuts, putting the 2 x 4 on the other side of the hub (3:00 position.)
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. I should have mentioned that the brakes last worked in the 70's when it went into the barn.

I am not a fan of air wrenches and I don't have a compressor anyway (yet), so I tried the wrench brace idea coupled with careful application of heat. Worked well. The resto continues; new questions sure to come.
