TR4/4A TR4 Transmission question

My overdrive transmission needs to be rebuildt, and am putting in a non-od unit until done.
There is a clamp with a weighted squished ball hanging from
the rear transmission extension. What is this? and is this
necessary? Could not find any info in the manuals.
Thanks

It is not part of the exhaust. There is another clamp for that. This is mounted/clamped at the end of the extension, just before the rear flange for the drive shaft.
Thanks

Thanks for clearing up the mystery! I wonder if it is really necessary?

Hi,

Do you have a photo of the mystery item? I'd be interested to see it. TR4 don't normally have anything like that clamped to the rear of the gearbox extension.

There is a strap brace that bolts from the LH rear mounting flange to the LH rear side of the gearbox top cover, right at the shifter lever. This is often omitted during rebuilds.

The only other bracket at the g'box tailpiece is on the RH side, under the mounting flange. This is a bracket with a large welded-on nut that serves a clamp hanger for the exhaust system.

I've actually seen it on several original TR4's. I do think that many owners tossed them and didn't see much of a difference without it. I know of one 1962 TR4 I helped restore here in Fort Collins that had the strap brace and the large rubber weighted clamp. The owner has owned the car from new (bought in New York, Long Island some place) and it had never been modified, other than the seats being done over with cloth. FWIW I have also seen it on other early 4's.
