TR4/4A TR4 sterring rack

Re: TR4 steering rack

Sorry about the typo...I was feeding my 1 yr old son while posting my original question.

So from your link it appears that on the later style TR4 rack mounting, any rack from a later TR4 through TR6 will apply, correct??? I only ask b/c the part suppliers seem to list the TR4 rack separately from the TR4a - TR6 rack. Just want to double check before ordering.

Since my donor frame came with a worthless rack (housing is bent and part of housing has been burned off) I am in the market for a new rack. Two questions:
1) Has anyone used the quick rack as offered by TRF part No. RTR3022 $349.95? Pros/Cons
2) Has anyone sourced a rack from VicyBrit part No. 5-5947 $179.95 seems to good to be true.

Thanks,

Greg

Re: TR4 steering rack

I think, (and I am relying on memory here, so you need confirmation before basing a decision on this) that the TR4/4a rack is 2.5 turns lock to lock, while the TR6 rack is 3.5 turns.
The "quick rack" may be simply an earlier ratio, as I think they are similar in other respects.
Simon.

Re: TR4 steering rack

Greg-

I've had exactly the same question on the original racks - you may also want to think about buying from Moss or at least give them a quick call. I tried earlier, but their one expert on the racks was on an extended vacation a the time I was interested. I tried TRF also but must have picked a bad day as the only response I got was that they could rebuild the original if you sent them a good core.

I've never seen the racks physically side by side, but the only thing I've seen is in the original TR4 manual where they show dimension differences between the late 4 and 4a racks. I think from that manual the only outward difference was a slight length difference on the inner tie rods.

Simon may very well be correct on lock to lock turns, but if thats the case the quick ratio is probably closer to the TR4 rack you have.

Re: TR4 steering rack

As I remember, outer tie-rods are .130" longer on a TR-4. I have a TR4 and have installed a TR4a rack with no problems.
