TR4/4A TR4 Steering Rack Problems

Well, I took my steering rack apart, first just the cap, spring and plunger, then the pinion gear and bush. I actually never got the plunger out since it was tight in the rack.

But I did check the shims and the clearances, and all seemed perfect, so I greased it up and put it back together.

My car has been on jack stands for 2 months, the tires are still on, and the now the steering is very tight and stiff when I turn the wheel. For what it's worth, I took the cap and spring out and it makes no difference (which seems strange to me).

I can't imagine what I did wrong, unless the steering is supposed to be tight after re-greasing and reassembly (and with the car on jacks and the tires on), which I doubt. When I say "tight," I mean noticeably more than before I engaged in my needless handiwork.

Can someone give me an educated guess as to what I did wrong? Thank you.
