Ok, so I got a proper TR4 shifter for my TR4. PO apparently did the TR3 conversion which I can't stand b/c I keep hitting my knuckles into the dash pod. Question, am I able to take out a seat, pull the carpet and access the tunnel for removal and swap, or do I have to take out both seats/carpets to accomplish? Like to keep work to a minimum and no surprises on time...

I'd recommend pulling both seats, your going to be up inside the car taking out bolts the secure the trans tunnel to the body. You are going to want all the room you can get. The trans tunnel when it comes out will be like removing a puzzle piece. Again you will want the room to wiggle it around to get it by the emergency brake and over the shifter. Not a hard job, a couple of things to work with but plan on a 3/4 hours for the job.
BTW - reread your post, you might be lucky enough to do this w/o removing the sests. Remove the rubber boot around the shifter (with the trans in neutral) then remove long bolt that goes thru it ( that will be the key), pull the metal ring, that may require a little tapping with screwdriver & hammer to move it. Once its off the rest will go quickly.

May be too simple but why not just unscrew the shifter and take it to a machine / job shop and ask them to shorten an inch or so and cut new threads.

Besides, the shifter doesn't just unscrew. The knob does, but not the shifter arm that the OP wants to change.
