TR4/4A TR4 Plastic Battery Box Liner?

I am installing a new water pump to heater steel line. On my original, the bracket that bolts to the exhaust header stud was broken off. Anyway, I am having a hard time clearing the battery box liner (12" X 7") with the new line's bracket. Has anyone with a battery box had this problem before?

I am thinking about taking the liner out and using a battery mat.

I hope this will wrap up my current wrenching program.
The new engine mounts (the ones on the car were worn out and in sideways) led to new cooling system hoses and clamps, which has gotten me to the heater system. Oh boy!

TIA, Jeremy

Jeremy-

I think I have 3 Amco boxes sitting around, and all of them have that issue with holes in them - pretty sure my current box is bent slightly around the problem. I'd still use the box for what its worth, maybe get creative with an exacto knife if you must make some room.

The only reason to even consider using an ill fitting plastic

The only reason to even consider using an ill fitting plastic battery box is to catch any leaking acid from a wet cell battery. Solution is to use an Optima gel type battery that will not leak. Expensive, yes, but an Optima will outlast the typical wet battery by a factor of at least 2 if not 3. If the non period look of an Optima bothers you then go to Moss for their "Tar Topper" case that will give the vintage look.

That's what I put in the TR3...an Optima. BTW, they are not gel batteries, but AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries...different then gel batteries. There are so many advantages to AGM's, especially for cars that see less use then a daily driver, and one that may be stored for several months. BTW, I can attest to the longevity of AGM's. I just replaced the original Panasonic AGM in my '92 Miata last month...with, of course, an Optima. :yesnod:
