TR4/4A TR4 Odd Overheating Issue

Now that the weather is cool, my TR4A runs terrific. Not even any pinging. And it runs cool, around 165 to 170.

But, strangely, as soon as I turn it off, it creeps right up to 185-190 and the auxilliary fan comes on.

It did not do this in the summer. Strange.

Any ideas?
 
I'm not sure why it diden't do it in the summer but, that is what is called the "hot soak".
Whenever you turn off an engine, the water pump stops circulating the coolant and the engine temp will spike while the now stagnent coolant tries to dissipate all the leftover heat.
This is normal.
We just don't notice it much because normally a modern temp guage stops working when you turn off the ignition.
If you were to sit in your modern car,after you shut it off, with the key on, you would see the guage (assuming you have a guage and not a light) rise 10 to 20 sometimes 30 degrees for several minutes, then it would come back down.
 
Agree, this is the normal state of affairs.

Remember to that that temp gauge isn't really the engine temp at all... just what the temperature of the coolant is at one particular spot in the thermostat housing. As the stopped engine sits (no coolant circulating) some spots get cooler and some get hotter before everything finally begins to cool down.

Great thing about those capillary tube gauges in Arizona... on a summers day when the engine is 'cold' you can read the room temperature on the gauge.
