TR4/4A Tr4 interiors

I have a couple of questions about TR4 interiors. First my car has a surrey top. Moss suggest ordering the TR4a interior panels when you have a surrey top. Could someone explain to me why or what's different? Is this correct information?

Next Moss is offering up to 17% off on your order if you spend enough (I'm sure I'll qualify). Is this a good deal or does someone know of a better deal just around the courner from... say TRF.

I need the whole interior. Panels, screws, carpets and padding (no seats. Anything to look out for? I was thinking loop curl in charcoal grey with black panels.

Now if my body/paint guy would just call me back and schedule me for painting!

the back pannel for a soft top tr4 snaps off to "hide" the top frame behind it when down. the tr4a does not do that (i think- might be wrong). if you have the surrey top then you wouldn't need this feature and it may even cause problems. Did the tr4a ever have back seats or was it only the tr4? I would think that with the tr4a with the top down there would not be room for anything else (back seats pointless).
I have the loop curl grey also (not installed-project not ready for it yet) but i have heard that the colour turns orange from the sun! Mine has not, but it is still in the box. I want the loop curl grey but if i was to do it again and had an old set i would use it for a pattern and go to an industrial carpet supplier to get material, cut it to match, then send it out for edging.

Larry, you can order Moss bits through our own Tony Barnhill, here on the BCF. He's a Moss distributor, and can get really good discounts. Worth contacting him to see what he can do for you.

Hi Larry,

Yeah, you don't need the "hoodstick" cover details that are used on the TR4 parts from most vendors. In other words, your rear cockpit and "doglegs" over the wheel wells will be different from the original stuff. The diff was that the TR4 soft top was removed from the hoodsticks for storage in the boot, and the now-bare hoodsticks were folded down and flaps and snaps used to cover them. Meanwhile the TR4A's soft top was designed to be folded and stay attached to the hoodsticks, so a cover and the snaps and such weren't used.

The panel behind the hoodstick cover on the TR4 was just plain, black cardboard (at least the original on my '62). A special set of these panels, with a finished back panel, no hoodstick cover and no snaps installed or holes to bolt up the hoodstick mounting plates was used when the surrey top installed.

If it's important to you, some of the other vendors might offer a more "correct" version of these parts. They really aren't "TR4A" either. (I'm also using a two-piece OEM hardtop - aka "surrey" - but am using custom panels throughout, so haven't really checked around.)

In answer to the other question, yes, a rear seat, such as it may be, was offered for TR4. I don't think one was offered with TR4A and later, because there was less room for one with the soft top stowed there.

My 4A parts car had special bolts with 1" tall pear shaped heads threaded into the rear shelf. The inverted pear shape head stood proud from the shelf and I assumed that it was a ball and socket attachment for a rear seat.

This was a 1966 TR4A tub.

Sorry, it collapsed due to complete frame disintegration, and rear 1/2 went to the recycler. Still have from the windshield forward though ... for now.

This is the interior of my Surrey. I am doing some maintenance. The black panels and coverings are absolutely original. The carpet and insulation are not.

Larry-

No personal experience, but I heard good things about interiors from John Skinner:

At least there is a pretty good listing of individual pieces.

Also, you will likely get a lot of mixed opinions on gray carpet - fading issues. Probably need to be careful on the purchase there. I'd like the same, gray looks good especially with the red exterior in my opinion.

By the way Mark - slick looking little third brake light on your surrey!

Yes, my opinion is mixed. One the one hand, it is the correct carpet for the car. OTOH, the grey carpet I got from TRF faded to something ugly... a strange shade of orange-grey.

TRF acknowledges this in the catalog but tries to pass it off by suggesting that the originals also faded. Yes they did (my TR4 had the original faded worn carpet when I got it) but the dyes in the original didn't take on this orange tint as they faded.

Perhaps other vendors have dyes that are more UV-resistant (or whatever is causing the problem).
