Somewhere there was a starting height for the head so that one could tell how much if any had been milled. I can't seem to find this information anywhere. any help will be appreciated. I have the first high port head with the 1 and 5/8" intake ports. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

I believe the TR head originally measured 3.330". So if you can accurately measure it you can just do the math and get a pretty good idea how much was milled.

From the factory, heads might vary +/- a few thousandths, or might have lost a little to skimming during a rebuild in the past 40 years. It's pretty much impossible to get a good, accurate measurement when the head is installed, so this is really a job to be done while the motor is disassembled.

Hello Mike,
Allan is right on the thickness. If you want a quick, reasonably accurate measurement take a feeler gage, pull out enough leaves to cram into the headgasket space, turn your calipers around to the internal blades and (probably with the valve cover off) open it up and eyeball the upper blade with the upper gasket surface. Or hold a flat piece of metal against the gasket surface that you can contact with the caliper blade.
