TR4/4A TR4 Door Fit ?

TR4

I'll be working on the door fit of my '64 TR4 this winter and thought I would see if any advice could be offered. My issue on the drivers door is it is very hard to close and will not move far enough forward to properly fit the opening. Right now, I have it all the way forward with a 1/4th inch gap at the front and close to nothing at the rear. The gap is even from top to bottom. The passenger door is great but after closing it several times the locking mechanism slides in and I have to move it out again. Both doors need to be slammed to close and I was wondering if I should remove the newer door seal to see if it would help to put in a thinner seal. All advice is appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Hi,

Is the car new to you and/or do you know its history?

I'm wondering if it's ever been in an accident. Has it ever been hit from the rear? It doesn't take much of an off-center hit to push a side forward, including the fender and the B-post that has the door guide and latch mounted on it.

One clue to a hit is if the rear fender on that side has a slight upward bulge in the center, about at the trunk lid line across the car. Other clues are buckling in the inner, rear wheel well arch, wrinkles in the trunk floor or walls or the "rear seat" flat area or floor arear behind the front seat.

If any of these clues exist, look under the car at the frame and see if there is any bending or buckling, usually in the straight front-to-rear box piece near the rear of the car, where it sweeps upward slightly. Also inspect the body mounting bracket at the rear, comparing right to left to see if one or the other is bent forward.

Hope this helps! Let us know what you find.

If there is damage of this sort, the frame is difficult to repair, but the body can be pulled back into shape with various methods.

Another possibility would be if someone before you replaced some of the body parts and didn't get everything aligned correctly during reassembly.

I wasn't able to get any history on the car since the previous owner did not want his previous owner to know he sold it. I believe the car has never been in any accident but probably has had 5 paint jobs in it's life so those may have altered the fit. If I take off the door, can I move the mounting spots on the car?
